We are in the middle of winter, so spring cleaning seems like an odd chore. But, as we are almost half way through the year, taking a good look at certain areas of your life can be a great call.
Check in with where you are with your savings. Are you on track with your kids’ education fund? Does your retirement fund need a little tweaking? And, have you enough cash in your emergency slush account for those rainy days?
Make sure you are not running too many bank accounts and accumulating high bank charges. Speak to your bank about lowering bank fees or changing bank account types.
Salary negotiations are often done midyear, so get your facts together and get ready to negotiate.
Whether you are a provisional tax payer or PAYE it’s a good idea to see whether you are paying enough. Chat to your tax consultant or accountant to do a midyear check as to where you’re at so that when it comes time to do your returns, you are prepared. Have you filed all your slips away either electronically or neatly in a file?
From electronic files to filing cabinets, get stuck in with clearing out old records. Anything older than 5 years that isn’t a legal document can go. Another area of tech clear-outs should be photo folders. Nowadays it’s possible to automatically upload your photos from your phone to a cloud storage but often times most of the pics are rubbish. Sort through them and clear some much-needed space.
While you’re at it, clear out your email folders. And do yourself a favour, create folders for different emails. It will be much easier to find an email this way. Go a step further and be religious about unsubscribing from all those junk emails you receive. It’s a tedious job but once it’s done, its done.
From sales rep to soccer mom or dad, your car is the next space that is occupied just as much as your bed. It can become a cesspool of a mess, down the back of the front seats, in those little pockets; in the cubby hole; under the seats; in the boot and down the sides of the seats. If you have kids or even pets, there can be many hiding places for rubbish.
YOUR LIVING SPACE
One always feels lighter when you can clear out clutter. You’re in your work space or office for much of the day, so when you get into your personal space it’s nice to have less clutter. Grab a few boxes and be ruthless. Go through cupboards, drawers, your attic, under your beds, the garage, and that man cave room too. Donate, recycle, repurpose and simply spring clean everything out that isn’t necessary. A great exercise would be to get the kids involved and make a game of throwing out obsolete toys and then donating them to a charity or your local community home.
Yes, one can also spring clean your relationships. We are not saying go unfriend people left, right and centre, but sifting through your connections, seeing who you should be linking up with and who you hardly see, is a good way to either gauge where you’re at with a relationship and which ones you should work harder on. There may be some people that are just no good for you and this would be the perfect time to assess who those are.
On the other end of the scale, take a look at those who have supported you in the first half of the year and focus on doing more with them.
A midyear spring clean can really help you to look back to see how far you have come and to aid you in your journey towards the end of the year.
